Alvin Skylight Covers
Alvin Skylight Covers are specially designed to protect people from falls through roof lights on both trapezoidal and standing seam roofs. According to a 2020 HSE publication (Booklet HSG33) roof works account for 25% of all deaths in the construction industry, and of that number the largest single cause was falls through roof lights or fragile roofing sheets. This kind of incident is entirely avoidable with the correct protective measures and safe working practices. Alvin Skylight Covers provide a safety backstop for workers on your roof by first highlighting where the fragile area is, and ultimately preventing a fall should a worker accidentally step or trip onto the cover.
You can get more detailed information as well as advice on the correct size of cover to order by speaking to one of our friendly experts either by phone on 020 8254 2626, by email at Sales@AlvinKeyClamp.co.uk , or by using the LiveChat in the bottom right corner of your screen. Please bear in mind that you should always conduct surveys and planning work from a place of safety, and ideally use remote video survey equipment to avoid working at height altogether.
Alvin Skylight covers are made from standard Alvin Key Clamps and tube, with a mesh panel that sits between the tubes. The panels come in two standard sizes, 2m by 1m and 1m by 1m, and they can be combined to fit standard or oversized skylight panels. All the components are hot-dip galvanised as standard which means, unlike the skylight roof panel itself, they won’t become brittle overtime, meaning this product should provide years or decades of service. Skylight covers are supplied as a kit of components to make it easier to get them up to roof level, and assembly once on site is quick and simple.
The mesh panels used in our skylight covers are designed to be thick enough to stop a person falling through, without blocking too much light coming into the building. If you need the skylight covers to stand out (to mitigate a trip hazard) we can have the tubular frames powder coated to a RAL colour of your choice, this option is available via our website or when contacting our friendly sales team on 020 8254 2626 or Sales@AlvinKeyClamp.co.uk.
One that sits flat on the roof surface, and one that is mounted onto small legs to raise it above the rooflight or skylight. The raised model is used often where the profile of the roof panels means that you need the extra clearance between fixing points, and it also makes it easier to clean the skylight panel itself. Alvin Skylight Covers are designed to deflect slightly to absorb the instantaneous load associated with a person tripping and falling onto them, if the available mounting position means that the standard cover might be in contact with the skylight panel, choosing this raised version will also minimise the risk of damage to the skylight if such an event occurs.
To purchase Alvin Skylight Covers, firstly you need to select a Primary Module, and then add extension panels to make up the length to the size of your skylight. For example, if you had a 3m by1m skylight, you would need to order a 2m by 1m primary module and a 1m by 1m extension panel. For a larger rooflight, say 2m by 2m, you would need a 2m by 1m primary module and a 2m by 1m extension panel. These dimensions are for the skylight itself and the tubular frame will extend beyond it on either side.
Alvin Skylight Covers have been tested to the Class B criteria for “Non-Fragility of Large Element Roof Assemblies” contained in the ACR Red Book, and an additional 1000 joule test to BS EN 1873 has been passed for added peace of mind.
